adding a blank column in a multiple columns report

My details section is 'formatted with multiple columns' and I don't know how to insert a blank column after specific fields. If the data is:

A
B
C
D

I would like this (a blank column between C and D):

A B C D

If the data was placed in rows this would be very simple. I would just add a section Details-b and conditionally suppress it. But adding another subsection doesn't do it in my case.
