I'm trying to add the 5th 7316 set to a BCM 50. The set comes up and I'm able to assign lines etc , but when I go off hook on the new set display says "keycode reqd". I've tried power off reboot twice. my backround is with Norstar. This is my first time with BCM

Go in element manager and look what keycodes are installed for the number of digital sets.

You will need to add a 4 seat digital auth code bringing you total to 8 and if you plan on expanding you might as well do an 8 seat auth code, good luck

There is a BCM 50 expansion unit next to the main - not powered on.
It has what looks like RJ 11s for Caller Id trunks on the bottom(it's wall mounted). Can you tell me how I can determine if there's a card for digital sets in the expansion unit? I ask because I saw in other posts that the phones out of the expansion don't require keycodes.

It sound like a trunk module only, they do have combo modules, trunks and stations, you will still need a key code for activation of that expansion module.

So if I added Nortel BCM 4X16 Combo Media Bay Module - NT5B42AAAA
That would still need seat authorization codes ?

You will need a keycode to authorize the expansion module. You need to check if it has one already. No, you will not need any other keycode to get the phones to work on the 4X16. You may need to get a vendor involved.

Expansion cabinet requires 1 key code for the expansion, anything inside it does not require a key code.

Main cabinet requires digital and trunk key codes.

Back in the day it was cheaper to sell an exp with a 4X16 module and 1 exp key code rather than purchase all kinds of codes on the main cabinet.

Also note that the wiring/ports is backwards on the amp cable from the main cabinet where digital ports start at the end and go left.
