I want to add a 308EC to my working system. What would be the proper order to place my cards in?

I have the following working configuration:

+--------------------
|VS R5.0 [slot 5]
+--------------------
|200E R3.1 [slot 4]
+--------------------
|ACS R5.0 [slot 3]
+--------------------
|206E R3.1 [slot 2]
+--------------------
|206E R3.1 [slot 1]
+--------------------

So, yesterday I fixed up my 308EC that had a zener diode that browned the board and a rectifier that was cracked. I replaced both parts, and decided to give the 308 a test run.

I used this test run configurtaion:
+--------------------
|VS R5.0 [slot 5]
+--------------------
|308EC R3.0 [slot 4]
+--------------------
|ACS R5.0 [slot 3]
+--------------------
|206E R3.1 [slot 2]
+--------------------
|206E R3.1 [slot 1]
+--------------------

Results: I blew the GMA 4amp fuse on the 5 slot carrier (Wow did that scare the crap out of me. Not to mention, I closed all the lights off in the closet so I could see the leds, lol). I replaced the fuse and reseated the original card configuration and it's back online.

Questions: Was the "test run" card order ok? Is there a recommend order? (I'm confused by manual) Also, Is there a safe way to test my 308EC board without compromising my system? Any advice is welcome.

Hi Randy,

Although you don't say it, I am going under the assumption that you powered down the carrier before switching out the cards.

If you did and the fuse blew when you powered the carrier back up, then the 308EC is bad.

I like to keep the voicemail card as the last active card in the carrier, so with a full 5 card carrier, the voicemail would be placed in the far right hand slot.

Hey Paul,

Never safe to assume... Yes I did power down the carrier =)

Yeah, the VS is in the last slot (slot5), so that's cool. Thanks for the help.

Hey Randy,

I'd go for a new 308, but if you are good working with electronics, you could try to replace the board's power supply. [smile]

Hi Randy,
The switching FET may be shorted. Plug the 308 in with a power cord or on it's own carrier. It just will not initialize but if it's bad it'll blow another fuse. Either send it away for repair / upgrade or buy a new one.
When you get it back, place it in slot 1 (furthest on your left). The lines on that card will have CLID and may have FAX CNG detection.

Thanks for the advice Chris and Paul. (Same names as my brother and father, heh)

I will use the spare power cord I have and plug in the 308 directly without being in the carrier. I didn't dare try that without "consent".

About putting it in slot 1, cool thanks.

Well,

I plugged the 308 into the wall and *poof*. I hate/love the smell of blown fuses. So I took a look at the power supply to see what and where.

1. The fuse was blown
2. The "big black pancake" circuit (the one with the c90-11 on it) was wacked out. (It looked like it arched with the metal thing next to it and welded some matter to itself)

So I compared the "big black pancake" to other power supplies, and I noticed that I had soldered it in backwards (in comparison). So I resoldered a new one in the correct way. Also repalced the fuse. I plugged the 308 into the wall and *silence*. (No green led either, which I think what you meant when you said that it would not initialize).

So, what do you think?

Hi Randy,
Time to try it. "Spark it up" with only the processor and it installed in case something unforseen happens.

Hey Randy

Backing up your system's configuration before installing the module might be worth the effort (Just in case the worst possible scenario happens [wink])

randy, Chris & Paul are givin ya good advice, I just can't wait for the next installment/episode !!
love the suspense ! and the smack! flash !!
hope it works. ( without the pyrotechnics this time.)

LOL,

What fun this is!!! I will get back with episode II: Revenge of Randy.

(Since I am working with a production system, I am playing it out by ear. Sorry, no timeline yet.)
