Hello,

I'm trying to add a Windows 2000 server just as a member server (not making it a domain controller, etc.) to my NT4 Domain.

When I installed the 2000 server CD I formatted a partition and loaded the OS on it. When it restarted, it ran through its 'Regional Settings', setting up my name/company name, liscensing modes and computer name/admin password. After that I installed all the 2000 Components and with this I installed all the Networking Components. It went through the rest of the setup but did not ask me to add this computer to a domain, etc?? It did not ask me anything at all about setting up my Networking Settings.

On restart, I came to my desktop and tried going to 'My Computer', 'System Properties' and 'Network Identification' and adding the computer there to my domain -- then it gives me an error: 'The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted'.

I figure I probably have to set up the all the address for it including the gateway, etc. first maybe before it will connect to my domain??

Does anyone have any ideas on what I might try to get this server connected to my NT4 domain?

thanks a lot in advance for any help!

It sounds as if Windows 2000 doesn't see (or support) your network card. The only time I've seen something like that is with a NIC that Windows didn't have a driver for. If you can, install the drivers for the NIC manually and see what happens from there.

If it didn't ask for an IP address or allow you to choose DHCP during setup, then it probably didn't see the card.

What kind of NIC do you have?

Adding Win2K servers to an NT4 domain is no problem. Just don't try to make them domain controllers, or things get really ugly.

I found out the problem...it was the nic driver. It wasn't already loaded so I loaded it manually and added the server to the domain.

thanks for help!
