I have a sbs2003 domain with 36 users, 27 windows pcs and 5 windows servers. Right now our SBS2003 (sp1) server is all alone in its domain controller roles which makes me very nervous, should it go down and backups not work. My main concern is the active directory information, I'm sure I can restore files but the NTDS data has me worried. I have 1 older windows 2000 (sp4) server available to me and I have tried to dcpromo it to act as another domain controller.
When I go through the dcpromo steps I get to the last one where the preparing active directory progress box comes up. Over top of that I get two popups:
-the first is a OK button box titled, "Small Business Server Limit" and the text says, "The operation failed with the following error: This product option is not available with the Small Business Server Edition of Windows"
-There is then another window (the dcpromo summary) titled, "Active Directory Installation Wizard" that says "Installation Failed, Active Directory Installation Failed" and it repeats the message of first popup box.
I am at a loss of what to do now, I was under the impression that I could have more domain controllers under a sbs2003 domain as long as the SBS box held the FSMO roles and this has me kind of baffled.
I have installed the MS Live Communications Server schema on the sbs2003 machine but 2003r2 and its schema update have not touched my network yet.
