Addinf internet access to existing AD Domain

I have a client with an existing AD domain, company.com. This is a stand alone system, I have added internet access and VPN's.

I cannot enable DNS forwarder on the server and some clients cannot log on to the server correctly. Can I change the existing AD domain to company.local or shoud I creare a new domain and move the clients to it?
