Hello,
Have you made sure that you are using a correct Domain account (domain\username) when you add a user. Are the SharePoint env. in the same domain as the user accounts? If not if they reside in another domain, do have you established a trust-realtionship between them?

Hello,
If both servers (systems) are in the same domain (A.D) there should not be any problems adding users to SharePoint. Just make sure that the Admin account that your SharePoint system is using have atleast the rights to READ from your active directory.
How are you trying to add the users, via e-mail address or domain\username?
