When i add users to security groups, they have to log off and back on again before the changes take effect. Is there any way of refreshing the users access without them having to log off and back on again?

Unfortunately no, the security assignments are done at login.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Just to add a little bit:

Users get group membership rights at logon. They get checked for permissions to files and folders when they try to access them. So, although not the desired way to give access, if you give them rights to a folder by referencing their account they will not need to log on again to access that folder or file.

I'd still say use groups to assign permissions 100% of the time when possible, as it's easier to track that way.
