Add User sa to a database

I'm attempting to add sa to the list of users for a database using the gui interface and it is telling me "error 15405: Cannot use the reserved user or role name 'sa'. I'm guessing this is a really stupid thing that I'm not thinking of but please help me out.

You don't need to add SA to anything. SA automatically has access to everything.

sa is not currently in the list of users for this database though.

That's correct. Look at all your other databases and you shouldn't see SA. SA is NOT a user. SA is a special login that has every privilige available.
