I have an Ultra 5 Solaris 8.0

I would like to add another Ethernet interface, can I use a standard PCI card i.e 3Com 590, 905b or Intel 10/100b ? or is it just propriety Sun equipment only ?

TIA

You could add the mentioned PCI network cards, but you would also have to then write drivers for some of them. Not the route I would choose as some hardware will absolutely not work with Sun kit.
Intel Pro/100 claims to support "UNIX" but I've never tried it in a Sun box, as does the Kingston FastEthernet PCI card, ditto.

There are several companies that make Sun Compatible hardware at prices that are much lower than Sun themselves. I have found Antares to be reliable and the kit that they supply likewise.
The Antares cards are supported without installing separate drivers, so after a simple "boot -r" they should be visible. Ian

"IF" is not a word it's a way of life
