Hello,

I hope someone can help me. My networking knowledge is seriously lacking.

Here is what I need to do:
I have an existing network with a Netopia 3000 DSL Modem/Router. I connect it to a Cisco 16 port switch.
I want to add a Cisco RV016 VPN router into the mix so that remote users can connect and get to shared resources.

I tried connecting the WAN1 port on the RV016 to the second port on the back of the modem (the first port is going to the switch). I entered the PPOE login information in the RV016, but it would never connect.

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong or point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ben

I have never had good luck with a scenario like that. I had a Speedstream modem, and tried connecting to a Cisco 2620XM router to no avail. I did not try very hard, I must admit. I just got a WIC-1ADSL for the router and ditched the modem---best thing I ever did. Now I have a pretty good firewall, and IPSEC VPN server set up.

In other words, it may behoove you to sell your existing equipment and get a Cisco 837 ADSL router. Those can be configured as a VPN server, and with only a 16 port switch you have, should handle your user load. They are also around $100 on Ebay.

What speed is the DSL circuit you have (U/D)?

Got it working. I had to bridge the connection with the Netopia Modem and let the RV016 do all the work. One problem with that was that it basically rendered the wireless on the modem useless. I got around that by adding a wireless access point to the RV016.

Then, we were able to configure the Sonic firewall to set up a private network for our connection using the OPT connection on the firewall and also act as a VPN endpoint...thus enabling us to return the other VPN router we purchased.
