Add items to dropdown list

A dropdown list can have two columns, affectionately referred to as the DataTextField and the DataValueField.
I need to be able to add items to both fields in code. When I use ddl.items.add(DatatextField,DataValueField) I get a message suggesting that the add method can only accept one parameter. Can anyone tell me how to add both fields please?
