I have an Add-In for Excel97. The .xla file lives out on a shared drive that I link to, to pull down to a given machine. The actual .xla file has a Time/Date stamp. However, how can I tell if that .xla file is the last file that was put onto a machine??? In short, I need version control for Add-In files.

Is is possible to tell the last version of a .xla Add-In on any given machine?

Is there a better way of updating machines with an updated version of a .xla file?

Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions.

You could easily have a constant within the AddIn that has the version number (my AddIns all come with an "About" menu item that will show version and date information). But you're trying to figure this out without actually opening the AddIn? Why doesn't the timestamp suffice?

For example, I made some updates to the .xla file on a Friday and put them onto Machine#ABC. Monday I come in, knowing that I modified and changed the .xla file(timestamp from previous Friday), but I don't remember what machine I put the updated version on, Machine#ABC or #DEF.

You method of adding an About menu seems to be good solution but is it possible through just openning Excel and looking somewhere? I haven't seen where this can be seen unless I do what you have mentioned about the About form.

Thanks again.

You have some possibilities to mark version of your project (aside of Rob's idea):
1. Before saving as add-in, from excel standard menu select File>Properties. You have Title and Comments fields, which next will appear in add-ins dialog as description of your add-in.
2. In VB Editor window, you can go Tools>VBAProject properties. Project name is what you see in Project explorer window (and registry), project description is what you see in the Description pane at the bottom of the Object Browser.
