Hello,

I'm trying to distribute an addin to my work team that I have made in Excel 2000 and it have proved to be only partially successful and I'm confused :-(

The addin is used to catelogue excel files to enable them to be quickly searched and retrived by the user. The catelogue of files are stored in a mdb file that the addin connects to using DAO. However, the problem that I keep getting on some of the computers is missing dll files. Strangely, all the computers are running XP-Pro and all have office 2000 installed so I'm not sure why any dll files are missing.

Additionally, I thought that if you compile a VBA project and save it as an Addin then the references etc would be included?

Can anyone explain to me why only some of my colleague's computers are not runing this Addin and is there any steps that can be taken to install the necessary support files (dll files) automatically.

All responses are gratefully recieved - many thanks in advance.

thanks

I think it very much depends on the type of Add-in that you are installing, and what it does. The DLLs that are present on a typical PC can vary enormously depending on what software has been run on the PC. With the newer versions of Office only installing what they consider necessary until the user needs to use it,and this can lead to big variances in what has been installed. I think that it will not be easy to make a foolproof installation system for your add-in. The most professional method would be to use Set-up Factory or any of the program installers to check for and install the DLLs as necessary according to OS.

Hi Richard,

thanks very much for the info. I suspected huge amounts of effort with respect to creating a foolproof installation. However, I'm still confused (hopefully I don't sound like a dumb-dumb!:)) I thought when you compile the addin the dlls would be included - this is where I'm clearly not understanding compilation.

I think that your advice on using a Set-up Factory or any of the program installers is a great one. Are they easy to use and are they available as freeware? If yes could you recommend where I can download them. Will the installer be able to add the required dlls to the operating system?

thanks richard
