Has anyone ever successfully added an IDE drive to a compaq server (specifically ML350 and Proliant 1600)?

I need to be able to access the drive at boot-time (while in DOS) to run Ghost and PQ's Server Image.

I've tried everything.

Compaq support says "that's not supported".

If I could do this, it would help my upgrading process considerably!!!!

ghost and partition magic can see the drives (scsi) at boot up anyway as long as you get the right drivers on disk

never tried adding the ide drive but cant see a prob as the cdrom is ide - so can you temporarily connect it on that slot

Thanks terry312!

That's an interesting idea and it makes sense too because when W2K server boots the drive is there...

Any idea on how I could do this?

I read in another post that suggested using an IDE controller is also a way to do this, but It would be great if I didn't have to buy this for every one of my servers.

I understand that you can fit an IDE drive to the CD IDE channel. Yes, Compaq don't support it but that doesn't mean you can't do it.

Compaq Servers don't support IDE drives.. and when they do they won't boot... (okay. there are some pure ide models...)

Just create a boot disk or a bootable cd with ghost / powerquest on it and connect to the network to dump a disk or partition image...

that is how I usually work..

When you have to backup 10 servers in 3 hours booting to the network won't exactly work.... It's easy, but when 10 are going at a time the network will CRAWL!!.

I'd be interest to hear any good solutions...
