Hello All;

I have an avaya merlin legend and am running winspm 6.0. I know very little about this system beyond changing and labeling extensions.

I have a new DID block of external numbers and I cannot seem to change an internal extension to that external extension.

Do I need to add the list of new available extensions to the system? to be able to move internal extensions over to them?

If so, how? I looked through the faq and support.avaya.com and found little info on this . . . and, then again, I may just be using the wrong search terms.

Thanks in advanced.

Adding DID numbers is a lot more involved than labeling stations or FAQ coverage. On Avaya's website you need to download the manuals: Feature Reference, System Manager, Planning Guide, etc. Some reading is required.

Important things to keep in mind: how are the DID numbers arriving, are they compatible with the Dial Plan, are all phones going to have one, and so forth?

Thanks for the reply . . . I'll go ahead and look through the material you recommended. Here are some further questions:

What terminology should I be using? What avaya terminology should I focus upon and look for pertaining to this topic? The winspm software isn't exactly intuitive, but I am trying.

I would think the new extensions are compatible with the dialplan . . . they are a continuation of what we already use. . . ie. ext's 710-720, now want to make 701-709 available to internal extensions.

Thanks Again

I gather from your last paragraph you have existing DID numbers. That may simplify things, but you may want to print out the Dial Plan. It is much easier to see what is there.

What software level is your Legend?

DID service can be provisioned three ways:
1. analogue trunking
2. DS1 with Channel Associated Signalling (CAS)
3. DS1 with PRIMARY ISDN

Which type do you have? You have existing DID numbers and they are assigned to stations. You now are adding another block or did these already exist but were not assigned?

The System Managers document may be a good place to start, because it has some tutorial sections and most of the documents have glossaries or indexes. The Feature Reference covers all the features and has very good descriptions if you are familiar with telephony terms. You may have to read between the lines, but we are here to help. So let's see what you have.

Assuming you have an existing T1 and just had your provider add some DID's (which is the most likely scenario) the trouble may be with the dial plan. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) the Merlin tries to keep you out of trouble when you make changes, so it won't let you use a number that it thinks it is using for something else; for example, if you want to use 790 for an extension, it won't let you because it holds that number in its default programming as a paging group.

When you try to renumber, what happens? If it just won't take the new number, and the screen keeps asking for a new number, I would print the dial plan, and then look for conflicts. Remember they won't always be exact matches; for example, 710 would conflict with 7100. You can do a find in word to help with your search if the dial plan printout is very large, since it is a text file.

If you do, in fact, have the DID's added to an existing pipe this should help you figure it out. Or at least give you a better sense of how your system is configured. If your T1 is a PRI, there are other variables that can cause problems, but we will check the simplest things first.

BTW - when I was first working on Legends and Magix, I would do a print all and just flip through it - helps a lot in understanding how the system works. After a while, you just look to certain areas, but the overall picture is an excellent way to start. Good luck!
