We are using Arcserve 11 and a Dell Powervault to perform backups to "virtual tapes" (directories), then performing a tape-to-tape copy to put the backup onto actual tapes.

I'm not forcing compression on the virtual tape (something I may institute soon). As a result, the tape to tape copy is copying data that isn't compressed.

is there a way to force compression during this copy phase? I don't see a flag in the manual that would allow this...

Thanks in advance for any help.

Load the target tape,
do a quick erase plus,
turn compression on,
format the tape,
use it for the tape copy.
ARCserve will maintain the compressed status of the tape.
see How does ARCserve control compression? faq478-4399 for details.
