We have a user who has changed name recently. We have been forwarding email from old account to new but would like to assign the old email address to the new user and have both accounts appear with just the one logon. The problem being that we have to delete the existing mailbox and assign a new email SMTP address through Exchange System manager, but how does the system delete all reference to the old mailbox and then accept the same email address for the new user.

Example:
username: olduser
email: olduser@myCompany.com

username: newuser
email: newuser@myCompany.com and olduser@myCompany.com

With both accounts visible with the newuser logon. I can delete mailboxes and create additional smtp addresses but the system sends an error when trying to add the SMTP of the recently deleted mailbox.

Thank you for any help

Did you run the Cleanup Agent in SM and delete the mailbox? If so, you should then wait a bit for replication to occur, then add the old SMTP address to the users changed ADUC account.

This is what you should have done.

For the Old User Account
In Active Directory > E-Mail Address's and add the New SMTP address. Set The NEw Address as the Primary one.

Also go to the General Tab and Account Tab change the names there.

Since you didn't do that, I've noticed that it takes some time for the settings to clear. I would delete the old account at the end of the day, and add the e-mail address to the new account at the beginning of the Next Day.

Thanks guys.
ended up deleting old user and was then able to add SMTP to newuser. appreciate the suggestions.

Suggestions? More like answers I'd say.
