adaptec easy CD 5.0 direct CD in XP doesn't work

Hello,
While formatting my CDRWs for packet writing so I can automate my backup using CDROMS, it fails. This has happened on my Win 2k machine and Win XP.

It says "it's unable to format this CD" It's a pretty generic reponse and without any error codes or additional help.

Are there known patches from Adaptec? I can't find their software side, but only hardware support.
