hI!
Just got emachines w-xp home edition preloaded. Had Adaptec CD creator 4.0.X and after I loaded it says as it is not compatible with windows XP, I need to upgrade to Version 5.0.X. For that I have to pay 99$ (50 mail in rebate) or use trial version.

When I did not upgrade it to 5, Windows XP found some problems of continuing with 4 and disabled by CD-RW (the only drive). When I looked in Device Mangers, it has put Red Cross mark on the driver whihc Adaptec has overlayed Windows XP default drivers.

I dont want to spend 99$ for new Adaptec version 5.0. I just want to get back my windows XP original drivers for CD-RW. How can I do that. Now my CD drive itself is disabled.

Please help me. Even emachines people don't know about this. Yes! It was my mistake not to check the compatibility when I loaded. Emachines T1105 does not come with any CD burner software.

Thanks for your help in advance.

First, uninstall ALL versions of Adaptec.
Restart, try loading 5.0
If it doesn't work, uninstall again.
Open regedit, do a search for ALL things containing "Adaptec", and delete them.
Don't worry if you delete something wrong, you can use system restore to get it back.
Restart, ignore any error messages you might get.
Reinstall Adaptec 5.
If it still won't work, uninstall again.
Open regedit, delete Adaptec and this time, also "Roxio".
Restart, reinstall.
I had to do this on 3 different machines, all because version 4 was NOT uninstalled before version 5 was installed. The specific installation instructions tell you that you MUST uninstall ALL previous versions before installing version 5. Cheers,
Jim
