Hello, people.

I'm working on a casemod project, trying to cram a flatpanel monitor into a briefcase PC, and I was wondering if it was possible to use an old laptop LCD screen instead.

I'm not familiar with what sort of adapter I would need.

Has anyone attempted this before?
Any advice on tutorials/pinouts/info?

Screen size/resolution/video quality is not a requirement of the project, trying to save some money on the display. Looks like I can buy a laptop replacement screen cheaper than a flat panel 15".

Thanks,
Jason D.

Notebooks [and the older laptops] use an inverter between the motherboard and the LCD panel. There's a bunch of wires or a ribbon cable connecting the TFT [Thin Film Transistor] panel to the base near one of the hinges. Haven't had an LCD Flat Panel monitor apart to see if it uses the same.

The connections to the motherboard may be difficult to determine, usually no schematics available from the vendor.

It should work but remember to give it it's own fan as the inverter generates heat. Not sure how much but I know its problem.

And as far as I know, it's detachable as it is replaceable due to it's burn out nature.

I have buit a testing computer to test old components.
It would be great if I could adapt an old laptop screen instead of lugging a monitor around. How have you got on with adapting the lcd screen to use with a desktop ?

Hi!

Im also looking for some hints how to connect a uses TFT screen from a laptop to a desktop computer in order to use it as a flatpanel screen.
Does anyone know which inverter that I should use?
The screen is from a Dell Inspiron 3700.
Any help!! mailto:mappolonizze@hotmail.com

That one shouldn't be too difficult to figure out. Your best bet is to call a Dell parts supplier in your area (google then out) and just ask. If it's not a strange, one of a kind, Dell product, odds are that you can get your hands on one.

I am trying to use a Compaq Armada screen in a dual monitor environment (desktop).
