AD User Manager Not Showing Exchange Tabs

I'm administering a newly upgraded Exchange 2000 machine and Windows 2000 native mode Active Directory. My problem is if I use Active Directory User & Computer Manager from either my desktop or a domain controller OTHER than the domain controller that I installed the ADC on during the upgrade I do not have the exchange tabs showing in the user properties. If I run AD User & Computer Manager from either the Exchange 2000 machine, which is not a domain controller, or the domain controller I installed the ADC on I do have the Exchange tabs showing in the user properties.

Two things I noticed that are odd to me. First, I opened the AD User & Computer Manager on my desktop and connected specifically to the domain controller that everything works perfectly fine on. Again, no mail tabs in the user properties. Secondly, if I select the Advanced Features from the view menu I can see the Microsoft Exchange System Objects in the AD hierarchy but still no mail tabs.

The upgrade from Exchange 5.5 happened over a month ago. There were no noticeable problems during the upgrade. Mailboxes have been created, deleted, modified and a number of other exchange related tasks have been completed. I found this problem because I was getting ready to delegate some of the administration to another employee. While I was creating a customized mmc for this task I found this problem. Any ideas?

install exchange system manager

- put in the exchange cd
- custom installation
- select option install for system manager

do this on every machine you use for administrative tasks

+ update them to the latest exchange service pack ;-)

that should do the trick

kind regards

Sorry but I'm confused. If I install the system manager on my other domain controllers and computer that will resolve my problem of Active Directory User & Computer Tool not showing the exchange related tabs under the user properties? I've never installed the Exchange System Manager on my one domain controller, only the ADC, yet it shows the mail options in the user properties.

I mean no disrespect so please take no offense, especially since you are trying to help me with my problem. Wasn't the whole purpose of being required to install the Active Directory Connector prior to the upgrade, importing the old 5.5 user directory to Active Directory, running setup with the /forestprep and /domainprep switches so I specifically wouldn't have to use Exchange System Manager to manage mailboxes. I was under the impression that once I used the /forestprep and /domainprep that my AD schema would be expanded to allow for this.

To clarify I am not looking for the ability to use Exchagne System Manager on every domain controller. I want that specifically restricted to myself on the mail server, as it is. I do want to be able to have a person other than myself use Active Directory User & Computer Manager to administer the user's mailboxes. This is where my problem lies...that tool, if ran from any other place other than the domain controller that I installed the Active Direcotry Connector on prior to the upgrade, does not show the mail tabs in the user properties.

You have to install the System Manager on any machine that is running AD if you want to see the Exchange tabs from that machine. You don't use the ESM to manage them, obviously, because you use AD for that. But to see the additional objects, you have to install the ESM package.

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Thanks for the information. True to your suggestion all works fine now. I really misunderstood how the tools work and the what exactly happened during the upgrade.

Thanks for both of your help.
