AD migration

When I migrate over machines from one domain to another during our AD upgrade the users profile changes. We are using the free AD migration tool from Microsoft. I was looking for a way to not have the profiles change for the users. It is a real pain to recover items from there desktops and have to set up email for them again. I know there are tools that I can buy but looking for the cheep way out.
