im having problems establishing a wireless connection between 2 pcs. to connect im using the philips cpwua054 usb adapter (11g) on both sides.
problem is, according to feedback on both ends they do connect, however, the automatic IP assignment fails. They come up with something like 169.254.69.53 / 255.255.0.0 but even with different c-subnets (169.254.x.x), and even though windows says the connection was established pings etc fail. If i manually assign IPs (like 192.168.0.1 (.2) / 255.255.255.0) nothing changes. Its like they arent really finding each other or something, but the air distance between them is really just a few centimeters ;)

what do i do?

What component is performing your DCHP function?

This is normally a 'router' or 'WAP' in a small network. It is not a function of the 'wireless adapter'.

192.168.0.1 is normally the default IP for many routers and your assigning this IP would/could cause conflicts.

well theres the problem, i dont think either is doing that. however, its just a simple 2-pc network and i got it to work before (with other computers)
if that helps, both computers are running XP, one Sp1, the other Sp2. even if i manually assign IPs, whether the classical 192.168.0.1 or any other IP with even another subnet mask, it just doesnt work.. i get "connected!" on both ends, yet there isnt really any data being transfered..

So. How do I set up one of the PCs to do the DCHP? is that possible at all? If one of the 2 pcs is connected to the internet, does it have to be the gateway pc?

Okay, im at my brothers place and since im leaving in a bit i probably wont be able to research this particular situation any further.
However, i find it interesting that at home i can establish a connection using the same wireless hardware without a problem
could it be the OS? here im running xp pro sp1 on the desktop and sp2 on the notebook, at home its sp2 on both.
Since in both cases, no router is used, it cant be that it "depends" on a hardware performing the DCHP..

Meng,

Normally, it is better to connect Ad-Hoc with no DHCP involved. If you set the Internet Connected PC to an IP of 192.168.0.1 - Mask 255.255.255.0 - Gateway BLANK (on the WiFi adapter) and the remote PC to 192.168.0.3 - Mask 255.255.255.0 - Gateway 192.168.0.1. Then ensure that the Internet Connection Adapter (be it ADSL/Broadband LAN or Dialup Modem) is set to "Allow other users to connect to the Internet through this PC" and "Allow Network PC's to Control this PC's internet Connection" it should automatically connect when in range. Although, the first time, you may have to connect it manually using the Wireless Zero Configuration in windows.

Hope this helps.

Yes I know that much as well (thanks nevertheless) however, even with manually set IPs and all those settings set correctly, it didnt seem to establish a connection that worked for anything, even though windows said the connection was up.
Ill try around some more, on different PCs, and see what i come up with I guess

Could the firewall be blocking things? Or maybe AV software?
