Hoping someone can help...can't think of anywhere else to ask...

After installing QuakeIII, I rebooted my computer (Win ME) and now I am confronted with none of my personal Icons and a message box "Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result the page may not display normally". This appears on the desktop and any folder I go into.

If I go into folder options and atttempt to make the folder "classic style" rather than web style, it refuses to let me although I do see the missing icons in the background before I click OK on the error box. This seems to be the source of the problem.

I can see how many objects are in the folders, but can't see the icons for the objects themselves. This is also happening in safe mode.

Also, when clicking the start button - nothing. However, I can get to a DOS prompt via WIN-R and can run windows progs using START (program).

I have tried re-installing but I can't do that either.

Thinking it might be because QIII put an early version of DirectX I tried to install Ver7A, but says I already have a later version.

Does anyone have a suggestion b4 I resort to formatting the drive?

Any thoughts on what is happenign really really appreciated.
