ActiveX control to enable talk to client ODBC source

Hi

I am developing an application in which I would like to enable IE to access an SQL server (MSDE 2000) on the client PC so that information can be subsequently posted to a database at the server. I am aware of the security issues here but I am dealing with a small clientele and believe I will be able to find a way through this maze. I understand an ActiveX control can be written to enable this requirement - can anyone please advise me where to start.
