I am new to ActiveX so this may be a silly question.
My understanding of ActiveX is that it is a method of getting COM compliant packages and languages to work with each other. For example, Visual Basic with Internet Explorer.

I have a book published way back in 1999 that states that when it comes to browsers, ActiveX technologies only work with the IE browser.

Is this still the case?
If so how do developers cater for all browsers?

There are many progarms, for example most of MSOffice programs haev support for ActiveX. The company Eolas also has a browser which cupport activeX.

Many browsers have supports for plugins. So, for each browser you should use its native plugin API.
