What do I need to do to make activesync work with Exchange?

Are you talking about Wireless ActiveSync? You will need Exchange 2003 with proper SSL setup. (I suggest 3rd party, Verisign, Thawte, etc)

If you have a single Exchange server, there are some extra settings you need to set.

Their certs start at $70 per year and work great. I've installed three in the last week.
