ActiveSync runs forever

I have an iPAQ Windows Mobile device and I am trying to set up synchronization with Outlook 2007 running on WinXP SP2. The sync setup proceeds normally, but when the sync reaches the "Synchronizing" phase, it appears to enter a forever loop. It does not exchange any information and never completes the process (I have left it for several hours).

Any ideas?
