Hi everyone,

I've had a look through the site and can't seem to find any topics about this (apologies if there are and I've missed them).

I'm running Win2k, AS 3.7.1 and an XDAII.

I've noticed that intermittently throughout the day, for no apparent reason and not specifically whilst anything is happening, my AS connections drops out and I either have to recradle the XDA, or in about half the cases, manually shut down the AS tasks (most of the time there are two) and restart AS.

I've tolerated it for some time but it's really starting to annoy me. If anyone else has experienced this, or perhaps knows what could be causing it (and what will solve it more importantly) I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers,
Pete

Hey Pete,
I have the same problem as well. At the office we are running Win2k and it happens just about on a daily basis. At home I am running XpPro and it may or may not happen once about every 2 weeks or so.

In a nut shell - This is a bug in the program and its ability to talk with the operating system of the computer.

If you should find a solution I would welcome it as well.

Thanks,
Noble

Well Noble, it appears we've stumbled on a problem too difficult for anyone in this forum.

I wonder if I'll get a star?

Cheers,
Pete

It wouldn't surprise me if it was a bug in ActiveSync, it certainly seems to be a flaky bit of software. Frequently I have problems the first time I try to connect but I don't suffer any connection drops so I can't throw any light on your specific issue.

If I had to make a wild guess I'd look at something like your office firewall, but that wouldn't explain why the connection suddenly breaks when nothing is happening.

The next thing I'd look at would be the sync options. For instance, have you set it to try to sync with an exchange server that isn't configured properly? It sounds like AS is trying to do something, getting a timeout or a failure and then assuming that it no longer has a connection.

Try stripping down all your sync option so that it's only trying to do one thing. No syncing with a server, no syncing emails, contacts or appointments, just something simple like syncing Files with a folder. If your connection stops dropping then you know that one of your options was causing the failures. Start adding your options back one at a time and leaving it to do its stuff for a few hours (or a day if you're patient) after you add each one. When the connection starts breaking again you'll know which item is causing the problem.

Failing that I'd completely uninstall everything to do with the PDA from your desktop, including deleting all profiles from 'Documents and Settings\{your user name}\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync', back up your device to a memory card and hard reset it. That way you're starting from a clean sheet and can reinstall everything from scratch, but don't forget to cross your fingers!

Finally, try connecting your cradle to a different USB socket. You never know, it might help!

Regards
