ActiveSync can't connect

I'm having difficulty with the ActiveSync of my new HP iPaq. When I connect it to my PC using the USB cable, sometimes the ActiveSync connects, and at other times it doesn't. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it all. I've disabled my firewall already. Does anyone experience this problem?

Sorry I didn't include some details:

I'm using a HP iPAQ rx 1950 series running on Windows Mobile 5.0. My PC is running Win2k Pro.
 
I use an older version of ActiveSync and an older PDA and I have always had occasional bad syncs. Sometimes when it repeatedly fails to sync I find that a soft reset sorts it out.

However, most of the time it syncs without problems. You could try checking the event log (Control Panel. Administrative Tools, Event Viewer) to see whether there's anything there that gives more info.

Other things to try are a different USB socket and/or cable, making sure your system's USB drivers are up to date, switching to an older version of ActiveSync, or checking HP's iPaq forums to see whether this is a common problem.
