My System:
I am using Windows 2003 server with a number of thin clients. The server is about a year old. We currently have IE 6.0 installed on the server (We don't want to go to 7.0 at this time).
My Settings:
We have the internet security zones locked down for the Internet zone, but fully open for the Trusted Sites zone.
I have added "*.windowsupdate.com" and "*.microsoft.com" to the trusted sites list.
We are not using "Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration" because we don't want users to be able to add their own trusted sites.
My Problem:
When I try to run windows update as the "administrator" user (or any other user with administrator privileges) I get the yellow warning bar "Your security settings do not allow Web sites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer...".
The windows update site also gives me the error message "The website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view..."
When I go to the windows update website the "Trusted sites" indicator shows in the bottom right corner of IE, so it appears to be hitting the correct zone.
This problem showed up a month ago, but we were able to get past it with some changes suggested by Microsoft. The problem has now reoccurred and Microsoft is wanting us to pay them a support fee to troubleshoot it.
