I just installed Win2k Server on my Machine. This is my home PC. I was going to install Active Directory...but I dont know what the #$%?! Im doing. :) The wizard was asking me about my domain...so I made one up. domain.myName.com...Do I need to have this registered or something? Later in the wizard it tried to access this domain and threw an error. What am I doing? Eventually Id like to have multiple computers, but for now....I just want to be able to have my computer as my server/workstation. I'd also like to put on an application server...like WebSphere and a database like Oracle 8i. Can I put all this on one machine???? I know about the concept of 3-tier architecture...but for now Ive only got one machine. Any insight would be sooooooo helpful.

Thanks :)))))

Hey,

Ok. I personally don't think that you should use Server as a workstation, simply cause it wasn't designed for that.

Anyway.
You don't have to register this domain with anyone. You want to create it. By the sound of things, you have told that server to JOIN the domain "domain.myName.com", when theres no such domain.
Instead you need to create one.

Boot up, forget all the start up crap, and "configure your server". Just close that all down. Now click start, then run. Type in:

DCPROMO

Follow the onscreen instructions.

I suggest that you go the microsoft site. Its really good at starting up a server, and creating a domain etc.
Try:
Its a step-by-step guide to setting up the server. Great.

I found that I had to install the Win2K server with a hub attached in order to get the dcpromo to work. Not sure why this was, just had to be done that way.
