I am upgrading my Nt servers to 2000 server and found that I could not use Active Directory unless I used a new domain name, the pre 2000 windows server would not met me install on to the exsisting domain.. My question is why did this happen am I doing something wrong???

Thank You In Advance..

Which servers did you start with? You can upgrade your PDC to be the first (PDC emulator) DC of a new domain and run the win2k box in "mixed-mode" to support the legacy servers. Upgrade your BDCs to be DCs to. When you have upgraded all the old NT4 boxes swap to Native mode.

That's correct,
first detach a BDC (in case something goes wrong during the upgrade),
then upgrade your PDC to Win2K.
You must upgrade your PDC first, because the Win2K SAM is mutli-master... you could corrupt your SAM database if you upgrade a BDC first...

You could also add a new BDC to your new NT4 domain,
detach if from the network,
promote it to PDC, and test the upgrade...
Then reformat the disk, and do the same on the production PDC (don't forget to detach a BDC !)
