Hi!

I'm managing some servers, and to be quite honest I've not got a huge amount of experience with managing them.

We've got a requirement to set up an Active Directory on one of our servers, however it is my understanding that it requires a DNS to run. We already have a DNS on another of our servers.

My first and foremost questions is: will the two DNS servers interfere with each other? And if so, how do I go about making the two DNS servers get along?

I've found plenty of information about setting up the AD, but none of it really explains what to do if there is an existing DNS. I would appreciate any information/tutorials/guidance that you can provide.

Many thanks in advance.

-Richard.

AD integrated DNS is generally the preferred way of doing things. Some research would be needed, but perhaps migrating to AD based DNS (only) would be best in this scenario. It's generally not that difficult to do. It just takes some planning and research.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

As Pat indicated it may require some planning especially if you are looking to share the same DNS zone name as your existing DNS server. We have a mix of AD DNS and Unix DNS servers but these environments use different domain names for resolution. Ideally though your Windows domain clients should be using AD DNS.
