I'm looking for some help on setting up Active Directory and Cognos. When I try to configre my Directory Server as Active Directory I get an error that it was unable to connect. Any help on this would help.

I no longer have support with cognos, so it some could email be the article in supportlink Volume 12 No 4. about
configuring Microsoft Active Directory Server that would help.

Thanks,
Linda

First of all, sorry for my english...

Suppose that you have the next conditions:
SERVER_COGNOS: Server with Cognos
SERVER_W2K: W2000 Server with Active Directory (this must be a primary controller)
Two server have a DNS suffix: mycompany.com
Into Active Directory we have Administrator / password

Then to configure Cognos with a LDAP with A.D. of Windows 2000 Server:

In Configuration Manager we'll put:
1) Services --> Access Manager - Directory Server
1.1) Are you sure you want.... Yes
1.2) Server Type Active Directory
1.3) Computer SERVER_W2K
1.4) Base distinguished name (DN) o=cognos,dc=mycompany, dc=com
1.5) Unrestricted User distinguisehd name cn=Administrator,cn=users,dc=mycomapy,dc=com
1.6) Unrestricted User Password <password of the user Administrator of A.D.>

2) Services --> Access Manager - Runtime --> Authentication Source Directory Server
3.1) ..... --> Authentication Source --> Directory Server --> Computer SERVER_W2K
3.2) ..... --> Authentication Source --> Directory Server --> DN o=cognos,dc=mycompany,dc=com

And that's all.
I hope it help you.

Thanks Maiki,
I followed your email and set it up just the way you have it. I still can not connect to the Active Directory. I'm getting the following error: "We were not able to connect to the Directory Server, are your host and port correct"
which they are. and I check port 389 it is listening. I am running Windows Server 2003 not 2000, But I didn't think that would make a difference. I think maybe I am missing something else in my cognos setup.

Linda

I also wanted to add that my cognos server and my active directory server are the same machine. I assume this should not be a problem at all.

Thanks for any help,
Linda

ONLY Series 7 Version 2 MR1 is supported on Windows 2003 Server. Are you running this version?

For 2003 Server have you made changes to the dsHeuristics setting?

Both of these should be yes, or it will NEVER work.

what changes do I have to make to 2003 Server the dsHeuristics setting? How do I make this changes?

Thanks,
Linda
