Active Directiry is rebuilding

Hello
I was hoping I could get some help with a server that is failing on me. It is a Win2k3 R2 Standard server that has SQl 2000 on it along with quite a few file shares. No updates have been installed for the past two months, but when I restarted it today I received an error: Security Accounts Manager initialization failed because of the following error: Directory Service cannot start, and the main logo has "The Active Directory is rebuilding indices. Please wait..." I have the option to click ok to reboot the system but when I do i get the same thing.
Any help would be appreciated.
If you need more info just let me know.

Thanks, I have already tried all that. I am currently attempting to restore the system state to several days ago to see if I can get it to work.
