Hello all!
I am thinking of designing a small web site to use as the Active desktop, which in its self is easy enough but I really would like a hypertext link/image map, to point to, and open any of my programs, in the same way a shortcut would do. I'm not sure if it can be done, I've tried a couple of ways, and so far, it just presumes I want to download it, in the same way, I would if I clicked a link on the web that pointed to an exe file. This does give me an option to open from current location, but this is not the desired effect. Has anybody been successful in doing this? Thanks

I don't know if this will help, but I think you might be able to use an ActiveX control to do this. Active X controls are so insecure they might let you get away with it. I don't know any easier ways. You also might be able to use vb script in the page, I've never done it, but you could try using something like visual basic's shell command.

I dont thing ActiveDesktop was intended to do what you are asking, you can still create shortcuts over the ActiveDesktop, which is why I think ActiveDesktop doesnt include this kind of thing, check out stardock.com they have something called DesktopX, kind of what you want to do, if they made this, chances are ActiveDesktop doesnt have that feature.

Sounds like you're trying to make one of those Windows Neptune Activity Centres. Let's see if Bill and his team can pull this off.

Thanks for your input, I have also had some help from the HTML forum, and so far JavaScript seems to do the trick partly, still having a few probs with it opening some programs, but it is working on the system programs and IE ok.

the only concern I have is that it's treating your programs like downloads, thus saving a copy into the temporary internet folder, then running it from there.
