when i click on local network icon (suse 7.3) i get an error message which states localhost cannot be found. could anyone please tell me how to activate it?

the conditions on the server are as follows:

samba is active

clients and server can be pinged in both directions.

ip addresses and all that stuff works.

windows client can see the samba server but not the other way around.

thanks

The machine looks for itself (localhost) on the loopback device, The ip should be set to 127.0.0.1 and hostname should be set to localhost and alias localhost.localdomain. It should be listed in you /etc/hosts file or where ever it is on your system. Chances are, it got removed when you set up you network because this is the default.
