Actionscripting 1

Why is it that when I go into the actionscript section of something and add an action, I can only drag them from the side. But when I download some tutorials, the actions can be written free hand...if you get what I mean.

Probably an easy solution, but its been bugging me for a while now.

In the top right of your actionspanel click on the little arrow and select expert mode.
