Act 60. backup database gets merged when restoring

Have performed a clean install of windows xp pro on clients laptop. When restoring act database act indicates that the database is not a backup and merges the database. The file extention seems to be the issue. Is it possible that the database was backed up with a different version that uses a different file extention for the backup? If so Is there a work around as the merge loses many data fields?
Any help would be appreciated
