I'm evaluating ACT 10 (2008) to see if it is worth the move from ACT 5.0 (2000) for me. Most things work ok, so far. Is there a way to import the contents of the ACT 5 inbox? I'm testing on a different pc so I didn't do an in-place upgrade. Documents and emails attached to contacts worked ok by copying the respective folders over before converting the database. Can I copy the inbox folder somewhere and have it recognized?

I wouldn't use the Internet Email as the link to Outlook makes this the better choice.... but if the ACT! 5.0 email is there, it should be converted also.

I want to keep my Outlook email separate. All of my personal email is in Outlook and I want to keep my other email separate in ACT. The question is still, can old email be brought into the new ACT.

Let's just say that I want to use ACT for email (not Outlook). Outlook isn't installed. How can I bring my ACT 5.0 inbox into ACT 10?

I've looked at the linked article. It seems to apply to everything from ACT 7.0 (2005) and newer. I'm using ACT 5.0 (2000) and it seems odd that there is no documented path to get the email even into ACT 2005 let alone ACT 2008. There are all sorts of documents on how to convert the databases but in the older versions, the email isn't in the database. By default it is just contained in a folder C:\Program Files\ACT\Mail\Internet\Inbox.

The article steps still apply to converting an ACT! 5.0 email store to ACT! 10.0

Except replace "act8diag" with just "actdiag"

As far as I can tell, actdiag will only attach emails to contacts. That is already done in my case. I tried actdiag just to see and it doesn't do anything with the inbox.

In ACT 5, you set the preferred folder for email and internet mail. The email folder contains the emails that are attached to contacts. The internet mail folder contains emails (and folders) that are in the inbox. The actdiag only deals with the email folder (vs the internet mail folder).

Yes, I followed the directions as closely as I could (it was a little different in ACT 10). No inbox.

I've gone through quite a bit of trial and error to solve this problem. Here is where I am right now.

I thought that I would try to install ACT 10 on the same pc that ACT 5 was running on. ( I did this when I tried the above linked article - I tried the procedure once by just copying the files and once installing ACT 10 with ACT 5 already installed. I used virtual machines) I could not get the inbox to come into ACT 10.

Next I tried to install ACT 9 on the pc that ACT 5 was installed on. This mostly worked right away, with no extra steps. When I was done installing ACT 9, all of my internet mail folders were there, but the inbox and sent items were not. Progress, but not perfect. I tried to do the actdiag, but it didn't work at all, couldn't even see the databases.

For shiggles, I installed ACT 10 over ACT 9. This was the first install that seemed to do an in-place upgrade. Everything that worked in ACT 9 worked in ACT 10 - still no inbox or sent items.

This really seems far more difficult than it should be.

The only thing I can think of is that the ACT! 5 email might have some corruption preventing the conversion completing.

You could try getting a copy of ACT! 6 (even a trial), updating to ACT! 6 and converting to 19 from there and see if that helps.

Other than that, you'd need to have someone look at the data itself.
