i have an ACS rel 1 with a VS mail R1 in a 5 slot carrier. I found the vmail in slot 2 with the processor in the middle slot. the voicemail would not work. i told the customer the voicemail should be in slot 1 (isn't that right?) the other 3 slots were empty.

when i took the vmail out (after shutting the cabinet down) and put it in slot 1 and powered the system back up, the whole cabinet went down, no phones would work. when the mail is in slot 2, the system works but not the voicemail

my guess is the vmail is bad. i offered to get the VS Mail repaired or use a PC Card Mail.

is the PC Card mail compatible with the ACS 1? If I get the mail repaired, i suppose it belongs in slot 1, what will happen if I put it in slot 2, will the mail not work?

In a 5-slot carrier you must insert modules from left to right. Your ACS works with the VS Mail in slot 2 as it expects to see the first expansion module in slot 1. Since the system goes down with the VS Mail in slot 1 I would guess the VS Mail either has a bad power supply or a bad hard drive. All VS Mails are compatible with the ACS.

Beware that a newer PC card messaging is not compatible with a R1 ACS. From memory I think you need at least a R3 to use the newer small or large PC card messaging.

so i took the vs mail and put it in my system here in the office, it worked fine!

could it be something wrong with the 5 slot carrier? perhaps that is why the vmail was put in slot 2 because slot 1 had gone bad and now slot 2 has gone bad?

does this make sense?

Yes. I would check the connectors on slot 1. I suspect that the power connector has a physical problem. You can either replace the 5-slot carrier, or use an ACS 2-slot carrier if you're sure this customer will not grow past 3 lines and 8 extensions.

I've had some weird interactions with VS mail and R1 ACS processors, specifically when also using a 400 card. The 400 card must be placed AFTER the VS mail, although the system will NOT add 2 phantom lines for the VS mail (sees it as an 006 card, not a 206). I know it doesn't address your situation, but there could be something screwy!. If you have another VM, you could also try that in the customer's carrier.

When the voicemail is in slot 2, what voice mail ports are you assigning? It should be 28,29 for a 2 port v.m.. In slot 1 it would be 22,23. Sounds to me you have a bad 5 slot.

Hi jsaad,
I have found cracked connections in the older 5 slot carriers (power most common). Do not use two slot carriers if you have any respect for your customers. They bake the inside card.
