Acrobat Reader stops launching automatically

I've got a web based app that serves up PDF files on request. It will pop up the selected documement in Reader on the first couple of tries, but after 3 or 4 documents, Reader doesn't come up anymore - but if you launch it manually, the document you selected is right there. This happens with Acrobat Reader 4,5 and 6, and with Acrobat Professional 6 installed also. Any ideas on how to keep AcroRead coming up every time ?
