My boss and one of my co-workers have reported a problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader Version 6.0. They are both using Windows XP Pro. Here's the problem:

The first time they try using Acrobat Reader, it works fine. However, if they exit from the reader and try getting back into it, it freezes. When they press "Ctrl" - "Alt" - "Del", they can see that the acrord32 file is still running. If they end the process, they can use Adobe again (although the same problem happens again when they exit and try re-entering Adobe).

Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone found a better solution than simply ending the task every time?

Have a look at this Adobe Tech Doc to see if there's anything relevant.

Lots of people seem to solve this with solution 1 - deleting 65,000 plus acr*.tmp files in Documents and Settings\[user profile]\Local Settings\Temp

For this to work you have to activate view hidden and system files.
Cheers

Not to Hijack the thread, but I'm having a very similar problem with Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 (AAR6). I'm calling AAR6 through the PDF.OCX ActiveX object, using it as a server from Visual Basic 6. I'm simply passing it a filename to print. Works the first time (sometimes), but not after. No trappable error occurs that I can find.

We never had this problem using version AAR5. I have not been able to determine the reason for this problem happening with AAR6. We have had trouble in the past with dialogs from Adobe interrupting our application's progress (The worst is the check for updates dialog) but that is not what is happening here.

We have tried uninstalling and reinstalling AAR6 (even AAR5, which now no longer works either). Checked the user profiles for those ACR** files, not enough to matter. Our program has not changed in 12 months, so I am pretty sure it isn't us.

Any help from anyone? We're really in a bind here.

Try removing the updater.api from... well, from the folder that it's in (can't remember exactly right now!).

Tom,

Thanks I will try that, but as I said this problem appears to be separate / in addition to the updater problem. But I will give that a try. Any other suggestions from any of you out there?

Update: Just tried the suggestion of removing the Updater.api file, no effect -- the PDF document still continues to not print.
