In Acrobat Professional 8 they have removed the Select Image function which is very convenient for extracting a selected portion of an existing pdf to post to another document such as a web page or Powerpoint. It is now supposed to be "combined" with "Select Text" but in effect it is no longer available. They try to fob you off by pointing to the red-herring of Edit Preferences - General - MakeSelectToolSelectImageBeforeText but this is no use whatever unless what you want to extract is already an "image". What you could do in previous versions was in effect"create" an image by extracting a rectangle within a pdf which might contain text in a particular font and/or image(s) to create in effect a new image to be pasted elsewhere. Their own official forum suggests exporting the whole document as an eps but within Illustrator it is not possible to extract a combination of text and images and the latter programme also substitutes fonts so the original pdf is changed. I am very unhappy about this reduction of functionality and am looking for an alternative to Acrobat - not to make pdf documents but to extract things from my own pdfs! . Perhaps there is some “Image Grab” program or utility out there...?
It seems every time Adobe "upgrade" Acrobat they remove funtionality. Version 5 was better than 6 and 7 was better than 8. It seems the only solution to my problem is to un-install Version 8 and re-install an earlier version - if they have not built in something to prevent me doing this!
Any suggestions anyone?

If you export as eps you can use the Open command in Acrobat and select the eps. Distiller will launch and create a new pdf, based on what you have set as the default settings, and open it.

You can also use the snapshot tool to select sections of the pdf that include both pics and text and automatically copy to the clipboard.
