Acrobat 7.0 not seeing check boxes

I have a pdf file that was converted from a Word 2003 document. The Word document has check boxes that were created using the auto shapes tool. When I open the converted pdf version of the document in Acrobat 7.0 the check boxes are not visable and they do not print. If I open the pdf document in versions 5.0 or 6.0 the check boxes are visable.

Does anyone have a clue as to what might be going on here? Any help will be greatly appreciated.
