acrobat 6.0 splash screen graphics missing

I have just recently upgraded to adobe acrobat 6.0 on some of our in-house PCs that are still on Winnt40. I completely uninstalled 5.0 on these pcs. The installation goes fine, but when launching the program the graphics of the splash screen are missing and when the program fully opens all the icon graphics on the toolbars are also missing.

I have uninstalled and re-installed.....I have searched for this problem in this forum and on the Adobe website and have no reference to this issue.

can it be a graphics card/display issue? or any ideas?

tia for any ideas.
