I had another one that i haven't run into "yet." I got called out late Saturday night for one of our buildings that lost connectivity to the network. Our networking guys tried everything they could and called me in to check the fiber.

I shot light (or tried to) between two buildings and wasn't getting anything. Fiber related for a change..

This fiber feeds from another building and goes aerial to the building that was down. I saw a place where some DA drug the fiber with a truck and had the lashing down, so i was sure thats where the break was. I had my contractors come in with a OTDR and the footage of cabling related to the break wasn't adding up. It was showing 330 feet from the first building (around 150 past where the lashing was broken) and 200 from the building that was down? ? Going to the pole in the back of the building that was down, the fiber was shredded. I knew something was squirrelly at this point.

Squirrels had eaten all the way through the sheath, fiberglass strength members, aluminum and pieces of fiber (around 3/4" long) were laying on the ground.

I wonder if i can get overtime for sitting in the back of the building with a lawn chair, an ice chest (packed with my beverage of choice) , and my pellet rifle?? [smile]

I've read stories of squirrels chewing on fiber optic cable that Verizon runs for FiOS service.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

I have heard of it Dexman, but have never seen it until then. Those little buggers are really destructive...

Rats like it too. did a large fiber job at a dog food plant that was located beside a river. Saw rats so huge that would chase a normal cat just for fun, they managed to chew thru the pvc conduit and the fiber a couple of times before we had to go back and run some rigid conduit in a couple of sections.

Honest officer,I know I've been thinking but i ain't thunk yet

I've seen it happen more than a few times, armoured and non. I was based out of Madison and was called out to the East side of greater Chitown for a squirrel chew at about 3pm. Great fun. Never could understand what made them decide to go through the cable at that one spot though. lol

We installed undergroud fiber throughout a golf course ( plenty of rodents) We chose Beldin double jack Rodent resistant underground fiber-optic cable. So far two years and no problems!!
