Acomdata external hard drive not recognized

XP Home Edition 2002 Service Pack 3

Product: Acomdata pureDrive - 1 TB


Out of the box the device is not recognized by system.

Facts:
1. Out of the box, plugged in, connected to usb (front panel of desktop and back).

2. Blue light is on (not blinking).

3. Can hear fan.

4. Device does get warm.

5. No new drive letters under MY COMPUTER.

6. No new volumes under DISK MANAGEMENT.

7. USB Controllers under Devise Manager:
Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2442

Intel(R) 82801BA/BAM USB Universal Host Controller - 2444

USB Root Hub

USB Root Hub


Resolution attempts:

1. Reboot.

2. Plugged into other usb ports. Plugged in other devices (Blackberry, Camera--they worked).

3. From Device Manager updated all USB drivers.

4. Ran all Windows Updates.

5. Ran volume error checking

6. Plugged into Windows Vista machine--same results
 
Answer: Defective external drive. Unless there is a hidden I/O switch or USB/FW select switch (never seen one of those, but what the hey...) then the drive is defective, especially if you have looked in Disk Management. My next test would be to power up the drive then plug in the USB to see if you get any Windows prompts. If this is a new device, it is crib death. If not, it should definitely be covered by warranty, so I would NOT recommend opening it up, it's their job to get the drive to you (working) in one piece.

You could also try looking at the BIOS screen during POST. External USB storage devices often show up just before installed hard drives are listed. But as Tony recommends, don't mess with it - straight back to supplier...
